The Workshop: "well deserved break?"

In January and February my birdhouse production falls close to zero before picking up again in the spring. Only a few other projects are on my plate so I would say I'm taking a well deserved break.

Winter months provide time to think. And sketch, read, steal or modify a few ideas from other builders.

In 1942, during WW2 training exercises, Frank Herring and Doug Harrison often visited the Top Hat Pub in Southend-On-Sea, England after duties aboard ship were complete.

Doug, my father, writes about one night in his memoirs. “When we entered two WAAF girls were there, one blonde and one brunette. After three or four drinks we moved to their table...”

Boys will be boys?

1942. Many sailors, including one in the family, made their way to a nearby pub after duties at HMS Westcliff were done.

Details are still sketchy. Though I was able to locate an ‘Old Hat’ pub in Southend-On-Sea, England its original name may not be ‘Top Hat’ pub.

During WWII my father shared many lunch breaks and after dinner drinks with Gracie Purvis (WAAF Corporal) in ,he writes, "the ‘Top Hat’ pub." So, right town, but wrong name. Maybe.

Did Dad not remember all details correctly?

Details are sketchy. While my father served in Combined Operations during World War 2, he was stationed at HMS Westcliff in Southend-On-Sea, east coast of England.

He often drank pints at the Top Hat Pub, as he called it.
