The Way We Roll 13

Hamilton Print Drawer

While in Fenelon Falls last weekend I spent a bit of my hard-earned money on flea market or antique items. For example, I now sit in a vintage Harter chair while at the computer and my back is thanking me.

Soon I will hang a print drawer ('Hamilton' is stamped on the drawer handle) behind my desk in which to store - let me see - about 100 family treasures that I've collected on my journey through life, found/stashed in my desk drawers or that were given to me by family members over the years.

PS - There were two drawers in the shop I visited in Fenelon Falls but I only bought the one. So, if you are hungry to have one, call me. I return there in one month.

Price - $40 as I recall, the smaller of the two, and I'll only charge a small handling fee. Say... a million bucks! : )

Zoom w a View

Fav Photos from Fenelon Falls

While babysitting rambunctious twin grad-daughters on the weekend I only had time to take a few relaxed photos from my son's east-facing deck. Right around 7:30 AM the sun was peekin' thru a big maple.

Officially we were experiencing fall weather but it felt pretty summery to me.

Fog should be gone in an hour. Then I can do one last cannonball off my son's dock in Fenelon Falls for 2014.

Fenelon Falls

We arrived safely in the bustling town at about 2 PM yesterday and headed straight for a favourite stored where homemade jams and jellies line the shelves. A few locally made birdhouses line walls behind the counter and I like to peek at prices. Too high, I usually think.

Then off we drove to our son's house to catch out breaths before he arrived home with his family in tow, i.e., his lovely wife and energetic twin daughters, now five years old and as full of beans as ever.

Good times, gorgeous weather.

Family Time

Paddle Boat Trio

My two boys - with Grandson Ollie in charge of steering - head north toward downtown Fenelon Falls, one kilometre away.

Ollie had his Dad Paul (left) and Uncle Dave paddling this way and that, all in a good day's fun.

Family Time

Let's Go Thattaway!

Son Dave and I head south from his dock in Fenelon Falls toward Lake Sturgeon last Sunday. Grandchildren Ollie, Anna and Ella are aboard. Ollie says he is supplying 'speed and brakes'.

All in good fun.

Family Time

And Lumber Time

Often I load up on barn board when I visit my family in Fenelon Falls. Only six 16-footers will fit into the Civic's trunk, and that's after they have been cut into 5'4" sections.

I really like the old mill @ Handley Lumber. And I really really like the barn board because it's usually gray on both sides. Suits me to a T.

It Strikes Me Funny

Getting Some Rest

One week ago I returned from a seventeen-day, 4,800 kilometre-long motorcycle trip that included stops in PEI, Halifax and Ottawa. I was tired right down to my bones.

This weekend I am relaxing on the shady side of a long dock in Fenelon Falls. The hardest thing I have had to do is pick three toppings for my half of a pizza... while waiting for Netherland's first goal over Costa Rica.

This is what I call a rest!

Photo Study: "wintry caves and road trips" 4

The old camper got me to Fenelon falls safely (I packed light, was on board in 30 seconds) and the visit with my oldest son and family was delightful, especially when I saw the 'wintry, Christmasy display' on the front porch. It proved he kept the various birthday, Christmas and anniversary gifts I'd given him over the last few years.

["Oh, my son has some rare ones!"]

["The weezy bird? Australia? New Zealand? Maui?"]

Where the weezy bird comes from, I'm not sure.

Zoom w a View: "Snow at your end?"

I woke up this morning to a lovely white and watery scene in Fenelon Falls.

My granddaughters and their babysitter, i.e., my wife Pat (I was allowed to sleep in because I did all the driving the last two days), are already up and left the coffee pot unguarded.

Camera, coffee, calm.

I don't know if there is a better way to start off a Saturday.

What say you?

Zoom w a View (3)

Beach Park in Fenelon Falls is a good place to sit, relax, allow a breeze to blow through what's left of my hair, or jump from rock to rock to slimy log along the shoreline of Cameron Lake, hopefully without falling into the water!

Simcoe Day 2013

I spent Simcoe Day participating in dozens of exciting events.

For example, I watched boats cruise upon the Trent-Severn...

I snapped an American Kestral at rest

I read one of my favourite books

I dreamed about cloud formations

I saluted my favourite flag

...and that's just for starters.

a robin's view of a busy fly zone

My son's upper deck in Fenelon Falls is a busy fly zone. Members of the family can witness hundreds of flights per day while enjoying coffee steps away, on the lower deck.

["Many daily flights are made by Mrs. Robin"]

His deep, wide yard is bird and bird watcher paradise, ideal for a robin's roost.

Fenelon Falls: Out of my comfort zone

Some of my favourite photographs come from Fenelon Falls, taken while I'm in my comfort zone - with family on my older son's dock, as boats coast by upon the Trent-Severn waterway, under sunny skies.

This morning I stepped outside my comfort zone during 'Santa Days' activities held inside Fenelon's new arena.

Photos reveal I'm on a learning curve.

Zoom w a View: The water zone

Zoning out.

I’m aware I’ve been doing it since I was in Grade Two. My mother, is she was alive, might say “earlier than that.”

[“It’s as if the leaves are small continents.”]

Recently, while amidst a noisy bunch of Harrison’s playing on the dock, some racing past - almost over - my chair, I reached for my camera, in a world of my own.

Photo Poser 8: Detective work for the birds

I am about to do detective work related to my digital photo files of Fenelon Falls landscapes to answer the following question: Can I find a background match for a photo handed me this morning by a man who scuba-dived near my son’s house in 1979?

I like a good puzzle, and while searching my first file came up with another one you can help me with, if you like detective work too.

What kind of bird is this? It lives beside my son’s dock, on the channel between Cameron and Sturgeon Lakes

Fenelon Falls: "Time to go"

By the time I have my two small bags packed and the car warmed up the sun will be on my son's back deck and glass fence panels.

By the time I stop for coffee at the half-way point (Milton) on my drive home to London, the frosty designs will have melted.

Do you take pictures of natural scenes on a regular basis?

Fenelon Falls: Free hop rhizomes

When I visited Fenelon Falls in the fall, I spotted wild hop flowers during a morning walk. I was unprepared at the time to dig them up and cart them home.

For those wondering. No, if I dig up the hop rhizomes quietly, and don't kill the mother plant - the flowers contain no seeds, just flavour for beer - and don't get caught, my action will not be considered theft.

Here I am again in Fenelon, but now it is too cold to do the digging. I must content myself with snapping photos of the river and hoping for an early spring in the land of opportunity.

For if I can dig up the rhizomes early and successfully replant them in London, I may have vines laden with hop flowers growing upon my backyard fence by September.

And if opportunity knocks twice, I'll be sipping an IPA homebrew by October.
