Anna and Ella: "The Alligator Game"

Our grand-daughters are four and a half years old, love to dress up in 'princess clothes', watch Ballerina Angelina videos over and over and over, and surprisingly, play a game I invented all by myself called The Alligator Game.

I play the significant role - the fierce alligator. I chase princesses and ballerinas around the house and wait patiently while they hide under covers on the guest bed or sneak behind bedroom doors. Unfortunately, I am often unable to find them and they laugh at me. Poor alligator!

Occasionally, I find them under a bundle of covers and try to eat their toes. One girls offers her fingertips instead but I say I don't like the taste of her nail polish. The other is completely opposed to my attempts to nibble her nose but doesn't mind if I tickle it with my whiskers. Their laughter is infectious and the game that used to last five minutes now occupies them for 15 - 20 or until the alligator is tired.

I could say more but it's 10:30 in the morning and this alligator needs a nap already.

It Strikes Me Funny: "on the bright side"

A vigorous snowfall has its advantages -

My wife and I stay indoors with our four- year-old grand-daughters and get to meet their new friends.

I think I know the guy on the left.

It Strikes Me Funny: "there's a quiz?"

Just by looking on our bathroom floor a person will be able to guess my wife and I are babysitting our four-year old granddaughters this weekend.

Unfortunately, on Sunday afternoon not only do we part company but there's a quiz. So far I can only pick out Sleeping Beauty.

Do you fare any better?

"the twins are turning four"

"Happy birthday. Happy Birthday." I'm practising.

In just a matter of days three significant birthdays will be celebrated. Anna's. Grandpa's. Ella's.

And our ages are closer than you think.

Duck talk

QUACK!

"What did he say, Daddy?" says Anna.

"I'm pretty sure he said quack!"

Zoom w a View: The inner bird

My grand-daughter's penguin looks scared in this 'x-ray photo' taken with an iPad2. It's skeleton is nowhere to be seen.

I was able to locate a lion and cow with the help of the iPad's heat-seeking feature.

Cool. I'd better start saving up for my own iPad.

Saturday 2:15 p.m.

What?!

It's not nap time for the twins? They're three. They should be in bed!

Saturday 1:30 p.m.

Three-year olds must have a different inner clock - regarding meals, baths, TV time, outdoor time - than adults my age. I finished washing the lunch dishes a few moments ago and Anna subsequently asked for spaghetti.

"How about a walk outside?" I asked.

"Spaghetti," she said.

Why didn't she eat it at noon with the rest of us? I wondered.

I said, "Why didn't you eat it earlier?"

"I wasn't hungry."

So I heated up the spaghetti (she also wanted more sauce than I had added) and after she ate she wanted a bath. Because of the extra sauce Anna needed a good soak.

Three-year olds are weird.

Saturday 10:30 a.m.

Breakfast dishes are finally washed and put away. Ella informed my wife and I that she eats at a different time than Anna so breakfast was a long, drawn out affair. Two hours!

Now I will try to convince the twins that a short walk would be a good idea. I don't think I can handle another round of cartoons - unless the girls can find 'Mighty Mouse' with my remote.

It Strikes Me Funny: “Anna, Ella and Grandpa Who”

The house is abuzz.

The twins are coming! The twins are coming!

Soon, my son will pull into the driveway with two-year old Anna and Ella aboard and I will be forgotten. I’ll be relegated to ‘Grandpa Who’ status.

Sure, I can live with that for the duration of their visit, though my wife and I will be almost dead by Monday morning when they leave for home in Fenelon Falls.

Anna and Ella: They are already talking up a storm

My wife and I were last in Fenelon Falls visiting our twin grand-daughters in September, to celebrate their first birthday and the fact they were already taller than me.

Now they are almost 14 months old and, in my opinion, absolutely rule the roost.

Their mom and dad, who we also visit with, even though the girls get all of the attention, will be free to have a lengthy conversation with us in about 19 years time. I'll be 80 years old and likely shuffling around the house in red long johns and bunny slippers.

Don't laugh.

I already have the slippers.

While carrying Ella around her parents' kitchen this afternoon she spoke to me.

She said, "Ma."

"Hey, close enough," I said.

Ella's mother told me that she was saying 'Max.' Her cousin Max's picture was on the fridge.

Brilliant kid, I thought.

I don't think I said my first words until I was almost 2 years old.

At age 3 I said my first full sentence.

I said, "Dad, can we change the channel, please? Red Skelton is on another station."

No one was as impressed as I was today when Ella spoke to me.

How old were you were you first watched Red?

Zoom w a View: Anna and Ella are stars

After making the decision to take a snap vacation I showed my wife how to use my new camera.

She got the hang of it in 30 seconds.

"And how do I make videos?" she asked.

"Push that button all the way down."

"Now, turn the camera on."

"Now, push that big button on top."

She got the hang of it in 30 seconds.

(For those wondering about the veracity of my last statement: I am a retired school teacher, after all, and I haven't forgotten how to adequately describe Steps 1, 2 and 3 in plain language. I bet you could now take lovely videos with my new camera if desired.)

As well, we are now proud owners of a 15-second clip of me driving the car toward off the 401 and onto the 407 East turnoff a few minutes outside of Milton, Ontario.

Before jumping into the lake again, allow me to show you a couple of my wife's pictures.

Want to watch me drive a car?

I didn't think so.

Anna and Ella: I miss them already

The twins have only been gone for a day after their week long visit.

I’m sleeping better but there isn’t as much energy in the house, or good cheer, with them gone.

Girls, give me another day to regain my strength, then come on back.

It’s not just me. Nanna misses you too.

Anna and Ella: “OK, I’ll babysit while you eat”

Yes, the pace around the house is quicker than it normally is, what with the grand-daughters here and the phone ringing off the hook (“Can we come over to see them?”), but having them here is worth it.

Anna and Ella are beauties.

["Anna - catchin' some rays": photos GAH]

They smile and laugh easily.

["Ella - a story or burp is on the way"]

They are starting to tell stories.

Ahh, they fit right in around here.

Anna and Ella: Six months old and lighting up a room

My son, his wife and daughters arrived safely today from Fenelon Falls and our house now looks like it did in 1973 when my wife and I had two young children of our own.

Sorry, I lied.

["Anna bats her long eyelashes at me. I'm hooked": photos GAH]

The modern family travels with two or three times as much gear as we did in the 1970s so I should say, honestly, our house is stuffed to the limit. Hardly any room left for all the friends and family members who want to come to get their first look at the twins.

["Ella doesn't like my beard but didn't cry when she saw me this time"]

Anna and Ella seem up for anything and while they're entertaining everyone I'll just go put a revolving door at the front of the house and on the fridge.

I’d say more but the phone just rang and I bet it’s not for my wife or I.
