Though Environment Minister Jim Prentice insists Canada is “a constructive player at the climate-change table,” our chief climate change negotiator, Michael Martin, while peeking out from behind Momma’s skirt, reminds people that “Canada is not proposing to change its 2020 emission targets” (i.e., 20% below 2006 levels by 2020, not near enough fast enough in my opinion).
Shame on us. We say we’re constructive while hiding behind very flimsy targets.
The Environment Minister also said, “Canada is prepared to be a responsible party and we’ll take on our just and fair share of that obligation - bearing in mind Canada only emits 2% of the world’s greenhouse gases.”
He is such a weasel.

Rather than admit his country off the charts when it comes to emissions per person (top three in the world, not bad), he hides behind the lowest number he can find.
Yes, the US produces more greenhouse gases than Canada. (But they have 10 times the population, Mr. Prentice).
Yes, China produces more GHGs than poor little Canada. (But they have over 30 times the population, for pity’s sake).
I get it. There are many other countries that produce more greenhouse gas.
Just not per person.
For each man, woman and child, Canada has some of the ugliest numbers on the planet.
It’s time to step out from behind Momma’s apron and do something about it.
