Live Small and Prosper: They’re delish - but kiss fish in your dish good-bye

When it comes to spending, eating, dressing up spiffy, building houses, driving cars and going out for a night on the town (pick a town, any town), we human beans don’t consider doing with a bit less until somebody comes up and smacks us in the face with a cold mackerel.

And pretty soon we’ll have to be smacked with just a photograph of the cold mackerel.

[“Photograph of the cold mackerel”: photo link]

Prey species like the aforementioned cold mackerel, herring, pollock, squid, anchoveta, etc., are over exploited by fisheries around the globe.

And what’s that mean?

“Dolphins, sharks and other large marine species (i.e. whales) around the world are going hungry as they seek out dwindling supplies of the small, overlooked species they feed on.” [Mar. 2, The Canadian Press]

It’s true.

Atlantic cod in the gulf of St. Lawrence “are becoming skinny” and striped bass in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay are “turning up emaciated” because of shrinking supplies of their food sources.

“Whales too are having difficulty finding prey... their populations will have trouble recovering.”

My suggestion: Before fish stocks find themselves in even more trouble, cut fish from your diet by half or more. Eat more fruit and vegetables.

Is it our God-given right to do whatever we want?

Are there other things we could eat less of, or eat more of, in order to conserve vital resources?

No, it is not our God-given right. It's definitely something to think about, seriously.
