When I started watching them on a back deck feeder several years ago it was through a window covered with cardboard that had one small hole in it. However, birds could still spot my twinkly eyeball and take off in seconds. Nowadays even the male cardinal, a jittery bird if I ever saw one, stops in and almost seems to relax ay the feeder while I'm looking through an unobstructed window.

That being said, any sudden movements still send the birds scurrying into the nearby trees.
