World War 2: Recommended Reading 3

Great Battles of World War ll
By Dr. Chris Mann

Great Battles provides a short, dramatic synopsis of 28 major battles of World War ll. Not all major battles. Missing are details related to significant Allied landings in North Africa, Sicily and Italy but these oversights might occur in a few books that are primarily written with the US point of view in mind. I still recommend it. Limited, but still enlightening.

The inclusion of 250-plus photographs from sources other than the oft-sourced Imperial War Museum (of the UK) compensates somewhat for the brevity of the table of contents.

["Each synopsis is brief as well. Highlights only"]

Good views of US landing craft and the accompanying flotillas of ships  (pg. 230) "gives an indication of the size of the naval armada involved in the operation." Good maps illustrating battle movements of Allied and Axis troops are also informative.

Generally, books of this type and size (240 pages) can be read quickly and create an appetite for more information concerning specific battles or turning points in the war.

Local or online used book stores would be excellent places in which to conduct a search for this book.
