"Save, save, save": The New Canadian mantra?

In spite of what gets drummed into our heads we’re saving our money.

“Spend, spend, spend,” governments insist.

We resist.

Our finance ministers demand, “Save the economy with your dollars!”

We close our ears to their hollers.

Our banks cry out, “Be a loyal little consumer.”

My thinking? Not this boomer.

“Canadians are socking away more money and spending less than people of many other industrialized countries in the current global economic downturn.” (a new survey suggests)

Why?

“The push to save is driven in part by a belief among almost one-third of Canadians that the recession will mean a delayed retirement.” (says the survey)

I also think many Canadians are moving toward a more frugal lifestyle to support future generations by conserving energy and other valuable resources today.

And many have learned that saving is simply more rewarding than spending.

Our precious economy or lifestyle can be dialed back by 10 -15 per cent and we’d still be happy people. Maybe even happier.

Keep up the good work, Canada.
