My Point of View: Conservative party dancing with the Star?

Its dance partner has changed and now, suddenly, the Canadian government is talking about the environment.

[Talking seriously? Much too early to tell. With an economist as leader, we’ll likely hear him counting beans first and foremost until he’s dethroned].

John Baird (remember him?), Canada’s former Conservative Environment Minister, had not one positive word about reducing greenhouse gas emissions (we’re among the top three worst offenders in the world per capita). His policy - hide in the shadow of George W. Bush.

Bush out. Obama in.

John Baird out. Jim Prentice in.

Now, with US President Obama shining a light on a clean air strategy and talking about GHG reductions our new minister is spinning together lovely sentences about the environment:

“This is a pivotal year in terms of how we will deal internationally with climate change.”

[link to The London Free Press article]

“It is a pivotal year in development of a Canadian domestic policy and it’s a critical year in the development of policy in the United States as they work toward a domestic approach on greenhouse gases.”

In other words, if Obama dances to a positive environmental tune, we might just follow his lead.

But can PM Harper pivot without proper shoes?

I think we Canadians should all practice holding our breath. Your thoughts?
